Hysteroscopy is the inspection of the uterine cavity by endoscopy with access through the cervix. It is a very important medical procedure in infertility investigation and treatment because it allows for the diagnosis of uterine pathology and serves as a method for surgical intervention.
The indications for hysteroscopy are infertility, recurrent miscarriages, intrauterine adhesions polyps, fibroids, repeated IVF failures and uterine abnormalities like bicornuate and septate uterus.
Hysteroscopy can be performed in a physicians office or in a hospital setting. There is little risk involved with this procedure and can be performed with local or general anesthesia.
Operative hysteroscopy is performed with the usage of resectoscope which allows the doctor to treat any pathology. In IVF hysteroscopy is very important because we place the embryos in the uterine cavity and the quality of the endometrium plays a significant role in the success of the treatment.
